This centrally located site in Basel - formerly belonging to the German railways
- is undergoing a transformation into a new urban quarter. In its centre lies a generous new park, the edges of which are defined by a series of apartment buildings and diverse, communal amenities such as a café, a swimming pool and a kindergarten. The proposed apartment building is a contribution to new forms of dwelling typologies; a mix of open and closed cluster apartments, shared apartments and traditional apartment layouts is offered. The communal spaces such as the multi-purpose entry hall, the roof terrace and the communal kitchen and recreation room are connected through an interior street; a rue interieure. The apartments floor plans are compact and spatially efficient , and therefore result in affordable rents. The two-sided orientation of the living areas to the park and the courtyard add spatial generosity and diversity to the apartments. The structure is based on a simple column grid, with non load-bearing partition walls in order to maintain long term flexibility.
